What to document first
Open the rear cover only if it can be done safely. Photograph the complete movement, serial number, grade markings, jewel count, adjustment markings, regulator, dial, case interior and exterior. Record the diameter excluding the crown.
Key inspection points
- Photograph the full movement plate and serial number.
- Do not assume every named grade has equal market demand.
- Watch for recased movements and replacement dials.
How to compare value
Compare watches by exact movement grade, size, jewel count, condition, case material, originality and service status. A common movement in a gold-filled case is not directly comparable with a scarce railroad grade or solid-gold example.
