Hamilton antique pocket watches

American pocket watches known for high-grade movements and strong railroad associations.

What to document first

Open the rear cover only if it can be done safely. Photograph the complete movement, serial number, grade markings, jewel count, adjustment markings, regulator, dial, case interior and exterior. Record the diameter excluding the crown.

Key inspection points

  • Record the movement grade and serial number, not only the dial name.
  • Verify lever setting, jewel count and adjustment markings for railroad claims.
  • Compare case originality separately from movement quality.

How to compare value

Compare watches by exact movement grade, size, jewel count, condition, case material, originality and service status. A common movement in a gold-filled case is not directly comparable with a scarce railroad grade or solid-gold example.
