Open the rear cover only if it can be done safely. Photograph the complete movement, serial number, grade markings, jewel count, adjustment markings, regulator, dial, case interior and exterior. Record the diameter excluding the crown.

Avoid dating an Elgin by its case number
Elgin production spanned a wide variety of watch sizes and movement grades. Dial signatures and case engravings may be misleading when a movement has been recased; the movement serial plus identifying layout gives a stronger starting point.
